Peruvian Craft & Alpaca
The Andean culture has a rich artistic textile tradition. Ancient artisans expressed their connection with nature and the universe through the colours and designs they used in their cloth. Artisans today preserve these ancestral traditions while creating modern crafts. Brown Llama's mission is to support Peruvian artisans by promoting their products in socially responsible international markets.
A chuspas (which is Quechua for bag) is an ancestral pouch that was used mainly to carry coca leaves and snacks such as potatoes, cheese, and corn. These bags are also a way to showcase the cloth and the skill of the weaver.
Colours have meanings in the Andean world. Red symbolizes the fertility of the earth and the passion that moves people to do things. Green represents the grass, while yellow represents the sun or "Inti" which symbolizes energy. Blue represents the sky or infinity.
After cleaning and carding the fibers, the weaver dyes it using natural materials. Cochineal, an insect that lives on cacti, is used to make red. Leaves from the indigo plant make blue, and seeds from the molle tree for yellow. Tara and carob seeds create brown tones. The chilca plant dyes fibres green and achiote seeds create orange.
In the Andean worldview, everything is related. The body is connected to the spirit; to be immortal and divine is conneceted to being an everyday person. The andean craftsman expresses the union of human beings with nature and the cosmos by using visual icons and the natural colours in his or her work.
